I’m in the middle of teaching an online class and my immediate neighbor bangs on my door. Tell the kids I ‘ll be back in a sec, and my neighbor tells me there’s a snake a few houses down and the neighbors are terrified. I ask if it’s rattling and she says no. I head over, see a good looking Arizona ground snake who has managed to scare my neighbor onto to the hood of their car. Grab the snake, who is real friendly and loves cuddles, and hand him over to my daughters. Free entertainment while I finish my class. Dropped him/her in my garden for some added pest control. This guy was mostly greens/browns. I’ve had several orange and striped ones in my yard over the years. Snake didn’t get the memo it was suppose to socially distance.

I’ve always loved snakes. In my younger days was able to instantly identify all the local varieties of snake before I dove into the grass/bush/tree to snatch it!

We used to have snakes in the yard, but the cats and dog are way too good and killing snakes.  We do still have a healthy king snake population (and they’re smart enough to stay out of the fence) which is awesome.

I live in the middle of a valley surrounded by 6 million people, but my neighborhood butts up to a mountain preserve. In the ten years I’ve lived here we’ve got quite a few snakes in the yard, mostly caught by my cats (who were fed to hunt scorpions). Been stung by a handful of scorpions (who I was about to accidentally kill), but the snakes have no problem hanging out. My daughters know how to identify snakes, and are pretty comfortable with them.

Snakes are cool. I used to love hanging out with the ball python my 4th & 5th grade classroom had.

We spotted several cottonmouths over the last year. Over the last week I’ve come across two small snakes which I’m pretty sure were juvenile cottonmouths. One I left alone. The other I spotted right before I hit it with the mower. I wasn’t sure I’d even seen it before it was chopped to bits. Whoops

I also spotted a garter snake in the back yard. I’m not a snake guy, so our policy is to leave them alone unless they are big, poisonous, and aggressive. M y biggest concern there is the dogs.

None of the snakes around here are quite s o personable...even the relatively harmless ones.

Whip snakes are beautiful but cryptic and if you do catch them they are like hanging on to oily spaghetti. The pythons are beautiful but grumpy and (as you know) have too many teeth. The rest are much better off being left well alone.

The legless lizards on the other hand...good times.
